Sacred Heart School PTFA were looking for a playground shelter for their pupils to use before registration, at break-times, and during outdoor learning. The school faculty were aware of an existing Aquila canopy at neighbouring St. Paul's Girls' School and decided it would be suitable for the purpose.
An 18m x 5m tensile structure was selected on the basis that anything less than 100 square metres is classed as a permitted development and generally does not require planning permission. With the school being a listed site it was important to check with the local authority whether any other conditions needed to be met. The canopy was deemed to be appropriate on the basis of it being a lightweight demountable structure, light-touch installation method and the availability of a sympathetic colour scheme.
As a modular system, the canopy can be extended, reduced in size and even relocated. The method of fixing using Rebar stakes avoids the need for concrete foundations. This method is tried and tested to resist the maximum pull-out load which the canopy could face in the location. The roof material is architectural grade PVC guaranteed for 10 years, with a design life of 20 years. The metal parts are powder coated to prevent chips, scratches and corrosion.
